Description
Gateway Special Recreation Association (Gateway SRA) is seeking a dynamic, motivated Therapeutic Recreation Specialist to lead inclusive programs for individuals with disabilities, with a strong focus on Special Olympics Illinois (SOILL) athletics and social enrichment opportunities. This position plays a vital role in coordinating team logistics, coaching athletes, and developing engaging, person-centered programs that promote fitness, social skills, teamwork, and community involvement.

Key Responsibilities
Special Olympics & Athletics
Serve as lead coach for assigned SOILL sports (e.g., basketball, bocce, track, bowling)
Manage logistics: practices, competition registration, transportation, uniforms, and equipment
Ensure athlete eligibility and compliance with SOILL rules and documentation requirements
Provide direct coaching and support volunteer coaches at practices and events
Represent Gateway SRA at regional, sectional, and state competitions
Maintain SOILL certifications and attend required training and seeding meetings
Social & Enrichment Programming
Plan and facilitate inclusive social clubs, community outings, and special events
Develop creative, adaptive programs based on participant interests and needs
Provide supervision and support according to agency safety and staffing protocols
Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation and growth
Administrative Duties
Track attendance, incidents, and participant progress; complete required reports and documentation
Maintain regular, clear communication with participants, families, and caregivers
Assist with brochure development, program descriptions, and budget planning
Evaluate program outcomes and contribute to continuous improvement efforts
Team & Agency Support
Attend staff meetings, professional trainings, and IPRA conferences
Collaborate with teammates on cross-program events, trips, and camps
Promote teamwork and model positive, professional behavior in all settings
Drive agency vehicles to transport participants as needed

Requirements
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Recreation Administration, or related field
Experience working with individuals with disabilities in community or recreational settings
SOILL coaching certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Valid Illinois driver's license and ability to drive agency vans and paratransit vehicles
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation
Frequent physical activity including standing, walking, bending, and participating in athletics and outings
