Join the City of West Hollywood as a Lifeguard I for the 2026 summer season ! No prior lifeguarding experience is required, but familiarity in an aquatic environment and strong swim skills are preferred. All training will be provided by the City! Availability to work a flexible schedule, including opening and closing shifts, weekends, and holidays, is essential.
What youll do:
- Lifeguard Duties: Assist and supervise pool patrons, perform rescues and lifesaving interventions when necessary, and enforce water safety rules.
- Swim Instruction: Teach swim lessons to individuals of all ages and skill levels and provide water aerobics sessions.
- Program Assistance: Support the coaching and assistance of various aquatics programs and events.
- Customer Service: Provide excellent service to pool patrons, address inquiries, and handle registration and fee collection.
- Pool Maintenance: Conduct basic pool maintenance tasks including water testing, facility cleaning, and general upkeep.

Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the following recruitment components. It is recommended that applicants reserve the dates.

- After March 5th, applications will be considered on an as-needed basis as the need for additional Lifeguards arises.

*All dates in the training series are mandatory. Training hours may vary, and the format will include a combination of virtual and in-person sessions.

Performs lifeguard functions, including: assisting pool patrons, performing appropriate rescues and lifesaving skills, teaching swimming lessons, water aerobics, assisting in coaching of City swim team and triathlon team, collecting fees, providing customer service to pool patrons. Also performs basic pool maintenance duties, including: testing water, facility cleaning and related maintenance duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)- Serves as pool lifeguard and is responsible for the safety of patrons while using pool facilities; provides customer service to pool patrons, collects fees for pool usage and assists in aquatic program registration.
- Performs basic pool maintenance functions, including: testing water; monitoring chemistry balance; facility cleaning, adding pool chemicals as directed and related maintenance duties.
- Teaches swimming lessons and exercise classes; coaches swim and triathlon teams.
- Performs customer service functions; answers phones and provides information; receives fees and processes receipts and takes registration information; makes and distributes brochures.
- Performs facilities operations and maintenance functions, including: basic equipment maintenance; and vacuuming, dusting and cleaning restrooms, exercise rooms and other public areas.
IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Disseminates a variety of information to various agencies, divisions, or departments via telephone, email, mail or FAX.
- Orders supplies.
- May serve as backup for other positions within the department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- No prior experience is required.
- Familiarity with Aquatics programs and aquatics facilities, teamwork skills, customer service experience, proficient computer skills, and lifeguarding background/experience is desirable.
- Must pass the initial water skills assessment and swim proficiency test during the recruitment process.
- StarGuard Elite Lifeguard Certification
- Starfish Aquatics Swim Instructor Certification
Other Requirements:
- Must be 16 years of age and older by June 9, 2025.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, including opening and closing shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Candidates 18 years of age or older must complete a CPR Code 5164 Background Questionnaire.
- Candidates selected for hire will be required to successfully complete a City-paid physical and background check (live scan).
- Pool safety rules and regulations.
- StarGuard Elite Lifeguard rescue techniques.
- Starfish Aquatics Swim Instruction techniques.
- Basic maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Handling pool chemicals as directed.
- Teaching swimming lessons.
- Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Operating a variety of pool, grounds and facilities maintenance equipment and hand tools.
- Performing routine cleaning and small repairs as directed on all assigned equipment.
- Pass the initial Water Skills Assessment and Swim Proficiency test, including routine follow-up skills tests regarding pool and safety procedures.
- Swim with proficiency and endurance
- Communicate in English both orally and in writing at the appropriate level.
- Perform mathematical calculations at the appropriate level.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Learn and follow City and departmental policies and procedures.
- Use a computer to perform the essential and important functions of the job.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit; reach with hands and arms; swim; use manual dexterity to operate machinery/tools; handle, seize, hold or otherwise work with hands; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; speak and hear; use odor and color perception and discrimination; and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
Working Conditions:
- While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to extreme temperatures, the sun, dirt and/or dust.
- The incumbent's working conditions are typically moderately loud.
- Working time requires irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on-call status.
