Summer Camp Counselor Job Summary Upward Bound is a federally funded program to assist low-income youth in preparing for college. The program includes intensive academic enrichment for students in grades 9 through 12 and a college orientation (Bridge) program for recent high school graduates. Participants reside in the University residence halls and receive instruction in language arts, financial literacy, foreign language, mathematics, and science. Supervised recreation, guidance and counseling, career exploration, community service, and career exploration are also part of the summer experience. Camp Counselors will work varied schedules and be available to students at various hours. Housing and most meals are provided at no cost to camp staff. Responsibilities Live in the University Residence Halls with high school students participating in the Upward Bound program and be on duty twenty-four hours per day, Sunday evening through Friday evening, for the duration of the six-week program. Assist instructors with the academic program. Plan and supervise community service and social, cultural, and recreational activities. Organize and run study halls and tutoring sessions. Ensure students are actively attending and participating in classes. Attend and supervise students during Wednesday activities. Provide supervision, individual and online group tutoring, mentoring, and peer advising. Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with adolescents from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. Available for the duration of the program, including the required training prior to the beginning of the program. Driver's license and good driving record required. Taking in person University coursework or having other employment during the summer program is not approved. Minimum Qualifications Preferences Persons who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in tutoring and/or peer counseling. Special Instructions This is a temporary position. This role will run from June 16th to August 1st. Weekly hours may exceed 20 hours per week.
