Position Summary
The City of Danbury is seeking responsible and safety-focused individuals to serve as Seasonal Lifeguards at Candlewood Lake. Lifeguards are responsible for protecting the safety and welfare of all guests and patrons by preventing accidents, responding to emergencies, and providing courteous and professional assistance to the public.
The lifeguard season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Some flexibility in scheduling may be available.
Applicants who are not currently certified may be eligible to participate in City- sponsored lifeguard training and certification programs.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Waterfront Director(s), Head Lifeguard and/or Assistant Head Lifeguard.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor swimming and waterfront areas to ensure patron safety.
- Enforce all beach, waterfront, and safety rules and regulations.
- Identify potential hazards and take preventative actions.
- Respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
- Perform water rescues and provide first aid, CPR, and AED assistance when necessary.
- Maintain awareness of weather conditions, water conditions, and other environmental hazards.
- Assist with maintaining lifeguard stations, safety equipment, and surrounding beach areas.
- Complete incident reports and daily activity logs when required.
- Provide information and assistance to patrons in a courteous and professional manner.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and in-service safety training.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Ability to swim proficiently and perform lifesaving techniques.
- Ability to remain alert and respond quickly in emergency situations.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
Certifications
One of the following is required:
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or equivalent) including CPR/AED and First Aid
OR
- Willingness to successfully complete City-sponsored lifeguard training and certification prior to the start of employment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to swim long distances and perform water rescues.
- Ability to tread water for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and assist patrons in emergency situations.
- Ability to work outdoors in sun, heat, wind, and varying weather conditions. Application Instructions

Location: Candlewood LakePay Rate: $18.00 per hour
Season: Monday of the week prior to Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Training: Required lifeguard training may be scheduled between May 11 and May 21.
Training dates may vary depending on certification needs and scheduling.
Opening Day: The waterfront opens Memorial Day (Monday, May 25).
Hours: Typical lifeguard shifts occur between 11am and 7pm Monday through Friday
and 10am through 7pm Saturday & Sunday.
Employees may occasionally be scheduled earlier for training, swim sessions, or
operational needs.
