POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Recreation Center Division of the Parks and Recreation Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • School or work experience that shows a level of maturity necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of lifeguarding. This can be shown by completion of the American Red Cross program or other certification programs, membership in clubs, teams, or organizations that show the ability to be dependable and reliable; and
  • Successfully pass a swim test to verify swimming abilities. Testing may include, but is not limited to, one or more of the following elements: timed swim, distance swim, object retrieval, and/or rescue techniques.

Required during tenure:

  • Must obtain and/or maintain certification(s) necessary to perform Essential Duties effectively and safely, including but not limited to:

o Within 30 days of hire: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) certification (training provided).

Desired:

  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) certification.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties

  • Instruction: Responsible for teaching swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke, etc.) and foundational water safety skills to individuals and groups;
  • Lesson Planning: Creates engaging lesson plans tailored to different ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced swimmers;
  • Safety and Supervision: Maintains constant student supervision, enforces pool rules, and follows the emergency action plan during any emergency situations that may arise;
  • Student Development: Observes students, evaluates progress, offers constructive criticism, demonstrates proper techniques to improve performance, builds confidence, and helps students overcome fears in the water;
  • Recordkeeping: Maintains accurate records of student skill progression and level completion;
  • Parent Communication: Shares feedback with parents on their child's development and upcoming program information;
  • Performs cleaning duties and maintains the restrooms and pool area in a safe and sanitary manner;
  • Inspects pool, equipment, and pool facility on a regular basis to ensure proper maintenance through reporting of and subsequent repair of discrepancies;
  • Swims at least one hour per week (on the clock);
  • Attends meetings and training classes as required;
  • Responsible for keeping current knowledge of pool rules, regulations, the emergency action plan, and effective swimming instruction practices;
  • With proper certification (American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer) certification, follows the emergency action plan during emergency situations requiring rescue due to drowning, an accident, injury, or other situation where a patron or employee may be harmed; may operate emergency equipment and utilize first aid supplies;
  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens, to ensure high operational and service standards; and
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES

  • May receive guidance and/or instruction from part-time Regular Lifeguards, as directed by the Aquatics and Recreation Coordinator;
  • May work community-wide special events, as needed;
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
