Umpqua Community College is seeking dependable Head Lifeguards to support the daily operations of the UCC pool facilities during the Summer Swim Program. This leadership role assists the Aquatics Director with staff supervision, training, scheduling, and overall pool operations while helping ensure a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for all patrons.
Head Lifeguards lead by example, provide guidance and support to pool staff, and respond quickly and professionally in emergency situations. This position is ideal for experienced lifeguards who enjoy mentoring others, working with the public, and promoting water safety.
- Supervise pool staff during assigned shifts and report concerns or incidents to the Aquatics Director
- Assist the Aquatics Director with the daily operation of pool facilities
- Guard the pool and instruct swim lessons as needed
- Serve as a liaison between the Aquatics Director and pool staff
- Assist in developing staff schedules, rotations, and break schedules
- Coordinate and support staff training, in-service trainings, and staff meetings
- Ensure the safety of all patrons using the UCC pool facilities
- Remain alert at all times and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies
- Observe and enforce all pool rules, regulations, and facility policies consistently
- Address patron concerns and enforce policies regarding health, safety, intoxication, controlled substances, and appropriate swim attire
- Assist with disciplinary actions and patron removals when necessary
- Conduct daily safety inspections of pool equipment and surrounding areas and report maintenance or safety concerns
- Supervise facility cleaning duties and ensure completion at the end of each shift
- Monitor and maintain posted bathing loads
- Secure all gates and doors at facility closing
- Assist with planning, organizing, supervising, and instructing the swim lesson program
- Complete required reports and paperwork accurately and timely
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings, trainings, and in-service sessions
- Model professionalism, teamwork, and positive leadership for staff
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including those of a Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard
KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to supervise staff and provide leadership in the absence of the Aquatics Director
- Ability to respond calmly, effectively, and appropriately in emergency situations
- Knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance, rescue techniques, CPR/AED, and emergency medical procedures
- Ability to teach swimming lessons and demonstrate safe work practices
- Strong leadership, communication, customer service, and public relations skills
- Ability to handle disciplinary situations professionally and communicate effectively with patrons and staff
- Ability to follow and provide verbal and written instructions
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, community groups, and the public
- Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and ages
- Ability to provide appropriate accommodations for patrons with disabilities
- Knowledge of pool equipment and systems, including pool vacuums, cash registers, computers, and pool mechanical systems
- Ability to complete routine administrative paperwork accurately
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Working Conditions:
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, balancing, and manual dexterity
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to swim and tread water for extended periods
- Occasional reaching with hands and arms
- Vision requirements include close and distance vision; vision must be correctable to 20/20. Hearing must be sufficient to communicate effectively with patrons and co-workers
- Work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, loud noises, fumes, dust, chlorine, pool chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and outdoor weather conditions
- Work involves exposure to hazards associated with aquatic emergencies
- Moderate physical activity, including occasional lifting or assisting individuals weighing more than 100 pounds
- Ability to work the full duration of the UCC Summer Swim Program
- Minimum of two seasons of lifeguarding experience in a formal recreation setting. A season is defined as at least six weeks of experience
- Minimum of two seasons of Water Safety Instructor experience in a formal recreation setting. A season is defined as at least six weeks of experience
- Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification
