The City of Valdez is seeking an energetic and organized Recreation Coordinator Athletics & Aquatics to help lead our diverse programs, including aquatics operations, sports leagues, tournaments, open gyms, rock wall activities, and special events.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Parks & Recreation Director, the Recreation Coordinator develops, maintains, and supervises a comprehensive recreation program that includes indoor pool operations, aquatic classes, athletics programming, recreation activities, and assigned community events. This role is responsible for staff leadership, program development, facility safety, marketing, and supporting budget management.
Key Responsibilities:- Oversee daily pool operations, facility cleanliness, and water quality to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate aquatics and athletics programs, including sport leagues, tournaments, open gyms, and rock wall activities.
- Recruit, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate staff.
- Manage lifeguard training and certifications.
- Support front desk operations and customer service.
- Prepare reports, procure supplies, and assist with budget monitoring.
- Create marketing materials, promote programs, and monitor social media.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills:
Strong understanding of aquatics operations, safety standards, and recreation programming.
Ability to supervise staff and manage multiple programs effectively.
This is a permanent, fully benefited, full-time hourly position working 37.5 hours per week in multiple recreation facilities. Hours may be non-standard. The City of Valdez offers a substantial benefits package as detailed in the benefits tab of this posting.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of relevant experience
CPR/AED and First Aid certification required or obtainable
Valid Alaska Drivers License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire)
Ability to pass background check
Degree in recreation or related field preferred

Schedule staff and provide operational support as needed.
Procure supplies and equipment.
Prepare reports and assist with budget monitoring.
Promote programs and respond to public inquiries.
Create and distribute marketing materials
Monitor social media platforms and respond as needed
Perform other duties as assigned.
