Job Summary:

Lifeguards are responsible for the conduct of all general beach and grounds safety and swim lessons. Guards should also present a friendly and positive image to all beach patrons at the five public swimming beaches under the direction of the Laconia Parks and Recreation Department.

Starting Pay: $17/hr

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of the Beach Supervisor, the Assistant Recreation & Facilities Director, the Director of Recreation & Facilities, and/or designee.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Prior waterfront experience preferred
  • Must have or be able to obtain prior to the start of the season: American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or equivalent), and WSI Certification (Instructors Only)
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Background Check
  • Ability to pass the Lifeguard Certification Pre-Test

Example of Duties:

  • The lifeguard has the liberty to call upon his/her resources to see that the following tasks are performed in a professional manner:
  • To the best of their ability, the guard is to supervise all activity in the water, on the beach, and on the grounds associated with the beach. Rules and regulations governing the use of the facilities are to be upheld at all times to the best of the guard's ability.
  • To handle all emergencies at the beach facilities, using their lifeguard training and procedures, along with common sense to insure the proper and immediate attention to those involved.
  • To keep in good physical condition and maintain a state of mental alertness at all times. Keep constant supervision on the water at all times.
  • To learn and practice emergency procedures established at the beaches.
  • To conduct safety checks of the beach, swimming area, and lifesaving equipment each day. Guards should know the trouble spots at each of the beaches. Report any unusual situations or hazards to the Directors and Beach Supervisor immediately.
  • To provide diligent supervision while exposed to the elements including, but not limited to, sunlight and heat. Must use sunscreen and wear sunglasses.
  • To clean the beach and grounds areas daily if no one is at the beach.
  • To inspect the bathhouse each morning to see that it is clean, properly supplied, and in top operating condition. If it is not, notify the Directors or the Beach Supervisor.
  • To teach swim lessons in an organized, consistent manner.
  • Participate in training sessions provided by the department (MANDATORY)
  • Complete all required paperwork in a timely manner including time sheets, accident reports, etc.
