GENERAL PURPOSE:
Serves as an integral part of the Lauderdale Lakes Team. An employee in this classification is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of the Citys Aquatic Facility for the convenience and enjoyment of patrons. The work involves accident prevention and the prompt performance of emergency lifesaving and first aid tasks as occasions require, and care and maintenance of all equipment, pool deck, swimming pool and locker room facilities. The employee works under immediate supervision, exercising some initiative and independent judgment.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Exercises supervision over junior lifeguard program staff, either directly or through subordinate supervision.
  • Observes swimmers and performs rescues, CPR and First Aid when necessary.
  • Enforces all rules, regulations and ordinances governing pool and pool activities to prevent accidents and maintain order.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment utilized; brush and vacuum pool, clean pool tiles; pressure clean pool desk.
  • Provides swimming instructions to adults and children.
  • Provides operational task set-up, breakdown of swim meets and other city events, not limited to the aquatic complex.
  • Assists the public in the requisition and completion of registration forms for aquatic programs/classes offered by the City.
  • Greets pool patrons, assists with parking, and provides information: collects fees; answers telephone and performs clerical duties, as position requires.
  • Assists Departmental staff with special events and/or programs.
  • Performs related work as required and as directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGESKILLSANDABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of lifesaving techniques, water rescue procedures, CPR, First Aid, and AED operation. Knowledge of swimming pool rules, safety regulations, and emergency response protocols.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Strong swimming skills and physical stamina to perform rescues and prolonged surveillance duties.
  • Ability to remain alert, attentive, and focused for extended periods of time.
  • Skilled in communicating effectively with patrons, coworkers, and emergency personnel.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and maintain composure under pressure.
  • Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must possess a Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • Possession of a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification, preferred.
  • Ability to perform and pass 200 yards of freestyle under 5 minutes swim test.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, and/or weekends.
PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS:
Must possess the ability to swim proficiently and perform water rescues in emergency situations. Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb for extended periods of time. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds or more during rescue operations or while moving equipment. Ability to maintain constant visual surveillance of patrons and react quickly in emergency situations. Ability to work in and around water for prolonged periods of time. Ability to tolerate exposure to heat, humidity, sunlight, wind, rain, and varying weather conditions. Sufficient strength, endurance, and agility to administer CPR, First Aid, and emergency rescue procedures. Ability to hear distress signals and communicate clearly with patrons and staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily outdoors at swimming pools, aquatic facilities, splash pads, or waterfront areas.
Employee is regularly exposed to wet and humid conditions, direct sunlight, high temperatures, and chlorinated water. Work may involve exposure to loud noise levels, crowded environments, and varying weather conditions. Employee may be required to respond to stressful or emergency situations involving injuries or distressed patrons. Work environment requires continuous attentiveness to ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons.
