Position Description
The Assistant Director for Sports Information plays a critical role in managing communications between the athletic department and media, fans, and stakeholders. This position is responsible for promoting athletic programs while ensuring accurate, timely dissemination of information. This role serves as a primary liaison between the athletic department and internal/external stakeholders, including media, campus partners, community members, and supporters. The position contributes to a strategic, integrated approach to communications, game operations, and event promotion while ensuring compliance with institutional and league policies. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Media Relations & Communications
- Serve as primary contact for media, coordinating interviews, press conferences, and coverage
- Write press releases, feature stories, game recaps, and recruiting materials
- Work with coaches and athletics leadership to promote teams and student-athletes
- Ensure timely reporting of scores and athletic news to media outlets and conference offices
- Research and implement effective communication strategies to reach media, alumni, and stakeholders
- Maintain strong relationships with media, campus partners, boosters, and community members
Game Day & Event Operations
- Coordinate and oversee game day media operations, including press box/table operations, live stats, and scoreboard updates
- Assist with set up for livestreaming games and statistics coordination
- Serve as point of contact for media and game operations at home events
- Assist in coordination of athletic events, including tournaments and special events
- Hire, train, and supervise game-day staff (announcers, statisticians, and video staff)
- Coordinate visiting team and media needs, including statistical reporting and logistics
- Support livestreaming and multimedia operations, including video board coordination and setup
Statistics, Records & Reporting
- Compile, maintain, and distribute team and individual statistics in compliance with league requirements
- Submit game statistics within required timelines
- Maintain rosters, schedules, scores, and archives
- Track and update career records, coach biographies, and program history
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of all statistical reporting
Digital Media & Website Management
- Maintain and update athletics website and content
- Manage social media platforms and post updates
- Create and publish digital content
- Ensure accuracy and accessibility of online content
- Oversee photography, digital assets, and archival systems for athletic events
Marketing, Publications & Promotion
- Develop strategies to promote athletic programs and events
- Design and produce game programs, media guides, schedules, and promotional materials
- Support recruiting materials and special event promotions
- Collaborate with athletics and university partners
- Contribute to outreach efforts that strengthen engagement with fans and community stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree, two years of experience in a sports information office, experience with PrestoStats, Adobe Creative Suite, digital media tools, and social media platforms; experience working with athletic teams, coaches, athletes, and media; experience with digital accessibility; and knowledge of AP writing style and athletic communications best practices.
Compensation
$40,000-44,000 and is commensurate on experience and qualifications.
