Location and Schedule

In this position you can expect to work a full-time schedule on-site at the assigned Denver Recreation Center. This is a full-time position with a schedule that may include mornings, evenings, and weekend, depending on operation hours and business needs.

Home Recreation College View 2525 South Decatur st. Denver, CO. 80219, but also you will work across the city including Berkeley Bath House, Harvey Park Rec., and other locations.

What Youll Do

The City and County of Denvers Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is committed to connecting communities to Colorados amazing outdoor spaces by providing unique, fun, and engaging programs to individuals of all ages and abilities. These exciting and uniquely Colorado programs include climbing, BMX, mountain biking, skateboarding, the Ruby Hill rail yard, bike park operations, a mobile rock wall, and so much more. As a part of the agencys Outdoor Adventure and Alternative Sports Strategic Plan , these programs often take place at some of Colorados most sought-after outdoor spaces including various Denver urban and mountain parks, skateparks, and bike parks.

DPRs Alternative Sports Team is seeking a Recreation Program Coordinator to join the team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recreation professional to develop and lead new programs, promote equity in nontraditional outdoor sports, and support key initiatives of the above-mentioned strategic plan and DPRs Game Plan for a Healthy City.

The Alternative Sports Recreation Program Coordinator, working collaboratively with other Program Coordinators and the Senior Supervisor, will be responsible for managing and marketing the day-to-day functions of Alternative Sports programs. Programs and activities that fall within the purview of Alternative Sports include oversight of Ruby Hill Ski and Snowboard Railyard, biking (inclusive of BMX, E-bike rides, Learn-to-Bike, and mountain biking), climbing on artificial rock walls (including the Carla Madison Recreation Centers outdoor climbing wall and the departments portable rock wall), roller-skating, skateboarding, disc golf, and a variety of other program offerings happening within Denvers Urban Parks System for participants of all ages.

As an Alternative Sports Recreation Program Coordinator, you will:

  • Coordinate with Recreation Coordinators, partner organizations, or city representatives to coordinate the use of facilities and implementation of programs that have been identified through collaborative efforts to meet the needs of the community and customers

  • Routinely instruct programs in all activity areas and train instructors in delivering safe, inclusive, and engaging recreational programs

  • Handle the day-to-day logistics of program vehicles including scheduling, planned and unplanned maintenance needs, collaboration with other program areas and fleet mechanics

  • Assist in staff recruitment, hiring, and implementation of part time staff training and development, including delivery of risk management theory/practice and vehicle driver training

  • Perform community outreach and engagement to solicit input regarding the programs direction and effectiveness, aiding in the development of new programs based on community needs

  • Oversee the program calendar and staff scheduling to maximize programming opportunities while ensuring that staffing and resources are available to support programs

  • Work closely with the DPR Marketing Team to help promote programs; regularly engage new and innovative marketing strategies to ensure continual growth of Alternative Sports programs

  • Collaborate with the Administrative Assistant and Senior Supervisor to reserve spaces with internal and external partners

  • Provide regular support for a designated recreation center based on the centers specific needs to create cross-collaborative opportunities between the center and Alternative Sports

  • Utilize regular office hours at the designated recreation center as designated by DPR leadership

  • Assist the Alternative Sports Team with other duties as assigned


What Youll Bring

We are looking for a passionate and organized recreation professional with experience in implementing and coordinating a variety of recreation programs. Candidates must enjoy working in a fast-paced setting and should excel while working under pressure. This position requires strong skills in both working collaboratively and independently.

Additionally, our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Experience planning, coordinating, and implementing recreation programs

  • Experience in marketing programs and/or community engagement

  • Experience in developing best safety practices for recreation programming

  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification

  • Current certification(s) in a variety of outdoor recreation disciplines

  • Valid drivers license and comfort driving a 14-passenger minibus and ability to drive a truck with a trailer

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to be flexible amidst changing priorities, and able to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends


Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience: Five (5) years of experience working in recreation, education, or a closely related field.

  • Licensures/Certification(s): Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Requires certification in CPR/First Aid at the time of application or by the completion of probation. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

  • Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
