Position Description Position: Assistant Personal Training Manager (APTM)
Reports to: Personal Training Manager (PTM)
Department: Club Operations

Purpose: The Assistant Personal Training Manager leads and supports a team of Personal Trainers while maintaining a strong focus on DYOP (Design Your Own Program) and personal production. The APTM is responsible for driving weekend training and sales performance and for setting up DYOP activity early in the week so the Personal Training Manager and Personal Trainers start MondayWednesday with full calendars. This role is a hybrid of leadership and hands-on personal training, ensuring high-quality member experience and strong revenue results. Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Support o Support the PTM in leading Personal Trainers (PTs) at the assigned location, helping implement strategies to attract and retain members. o Fill in (or ensure appropriate coverage) for PTs when they are unavailable to work as scheduled. o Model Excel Fitness and Planet Fitness standards on the floor, including member engagement, Judgment Free Zone behavior, and session quality.

DYOP & Sales Production (Primary Focus) o Personally deliver a consistent weekly volume of DYOP sessions, with emphasis on weekend days to drive new PT sales. o Proactively schedule and set up DYOPs for the PTM and all PTs MondayWednesday , ensuring each trainer starts the week with a full consult pipeline. o Conduct on-floor interactions, orientations, and follow-ups to convert members into DYOPs and training packages. o Maintain an active personal training client schedule to drive revenue and lead by example in session quality and retention. o Track personal Personal Training Service Revenue (PTSR) and DYOP conversion results and participate in weekly huddles with PTM to review performance.

Member Experience & Engagement o Ensure all fitness programming and DYOP sessions align with the clubs vision and enhance the member experience. o Serve as a point of contact for member feedback related to training; help resolve concerns and retain members in coaching programs. o Assist in designing and promoting fitness challenges, workshops, and special events that support PT and DYOP sales.
Operational & Administrative Duties o Maintain accurate documentation of client sessions, billing, and progress tracking in required systems (e.g., DataTrak, Trainerize, DotFit). o Ensure compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and operational guidelines in all PT and DYOP activities. o Assist in keeping training areas organized, clean, and stocked with necessary equipment and materials for DYOPs and training sessions.

Operations & Performance Management Support o Support the PTM in overseeing daily fitness operations, including PT and DYOP schedule coverage and basic staff performance follow-up. o Help the PTM monitor key metrics such as PTSR, DYOP volume and conversion, and member satisfaction. o Maintain a high level of facility cleanliness, safety, and compliance with health regulations within the training areas.

Time Allocation Expectations o Approximately 50% of scheduled hours spent training clients (personal PT production). o Approximately 50% of scheduled hours spent on DYOP activity and sales , including:
  • Delivering DYOP sessions (especially weekends).
  • Booking DYOPs for the PTM and PTs MondayWednesday.
  • On-floor lead generation and consult follow-up.

Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age. High School diploma or equivalent required; Associates degree preferred. Equivalent related work experience or a combination of experience and education may be considered in lieu of an Associates degree. Must maintain an active Personal Training Certification (NCCA-accredited) or a Bachelors degree in exercise science or kinesiology. CPR/AED certification required (or completion within first 30 days of employment). Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills, with the ability to inspire and support a team. Minimum of 1 year of experience in personal training, group fitness, or fitness leadership; previous supervisory experience is a plus. Basic computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with DataTrak and other related applications. Familiarity with Excel Fitness mission, values, and culture, as well as Planet Fitness brand and operational requirements. Demonstrated ability to run effective DYOP and small group-style sessions, and to convert these into ongoing training. Team-oriented, motivated, well-organized, and able to think critically and solve problems proactively. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Supervisory Role: This position s upports the PTM in guiding and developing the Personal Trainer team, helping ensure trainers meet service, DYOP, and revenue expectations. Helps reinforce Excel values, principles, and club performance metrics through daily coaching and example.
Work Environment: This job works in a fitness club environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, fax machines, and phones. The noise level in the club environment may be loud on a regular basis.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that a Team Player must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Regularly required to talk and hear. Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move objects up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time nonexempt position. A nonexempt Team Player is one who is entitled to the minimum wage and/or overtime pay protections of the FLSA.
Standard workweek is Saturday through Wednesday. Days/Hours are Saturday through Sunday, 7:00 am3:00 pm or 8:00 am4:00 pm (set by club/region; must provide consistent weekend coverage), and Monday through Wednesday, hours set by PTM/GM based on business needs and client schedules, with priority on DYOP set-up and training sessions. Work hours may include additional weekends or overnights as needed and are subject to change at any time depending on business needs.
Travel: Up to 5% travel is expected for this position to attend employee events, trainings, and conferences.
