Scope of Position

The Head Athletic Trainer (AT) facilitates the well-being and overall development of student-athletes in collaboration with LCCC Head Coaches. The AT works closely with the Strength & Conditioning staff and Director of Athletics to assess and elevate program operations, including budget tracking and reporting, insurance, equipment ordering, marketing/public relations, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, departmental compliance, and alumni engagement. The AT also partners with the Athletic Department to support a positive, inclusive campus culture for the LCCC community.

The AT develops and directs procedures for student-athlete wellness and recovery programs and oversees a comprehensive athletic training program for all sports. This includes advancing three primary goals: improving athletic performance, reducing injuries, and promoting lifelong fitness and movement skills. The AT designs and implements sport- and athlete-specific injury prevention and recovery plans based on scientific principles, supervises rehabilitation sessions, and evaluates athletes with a focus on injury prevention and recovery.

Additionally, the AT maintains the athletic training facility and establishes policies, plans, and procedures to ensure safe and professional operations. The AT also collaborates with the Strength & Conditioning staff, Exercise Science Program, and Human Resources to support and sustain a team member health and wellness program.

Key Measurable Expectations (KMEs)
  • Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of the LCCC Athletic Training program, including establishing and maintaining a positive philosophy across competition, academics, and community engagement.
  • Develop, monitor, and manage athletic training scholarships and program budgets.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate athletic training activities in compliance with NJCAA and Region 24 policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the AD and coaching staff to support student-athlete development strategies.
  • Maintain knowledge of NCAA, NJCAA, and Region 24 rules and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate injury, treatment, and referral records using Healthy Roster.
  • Develop emergency action plans and athletic training standards for all venues.
  • Provide and coordinate medical coverage for practices, games, tournaments, and hosted events, including operating and maintaining treatment areas at all sites.
  • Prepare student-athletes for participation through preventative taping, bandaging, and injury prevention measures.
  • Evaluate and care for injured athletes, coordinate with physicians and coaches on return-to-play decisions, and facilitate referrals as needed.
  • Serve as liaison among physicians, student-athletes, and coaches.
  • Maintain training room operations and hours to provide preventative and rehabilitative services.
  • Educate student-athletes on injury prevention and concussion protocols.
  • Serve as lead athletics administrator for insurance coordination, including completing and maintaining required documentation.
  • Assist the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach in developing and implementing an annual team member health and wellness program in collaboration with the Exercise Science Program and Human Resources.
  • Represent the department at professional, civic, charitable, and alumni events.
  • Assist with care and maintenance of athletic facilities, including gym, field, court, and training spaces.
  • Report information accurately and promptly to media through the Colleges Sports Information and Media Relations team.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising activities to support program advancement.
  • Foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with student-athletes, colleagues, community members, and the Trailblazers Booster Club.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and institutional information in accordance with college standards.
  • Participate in and support departmental responsibilities including fundraising, compliance, eligibility, recruitment, scheduling, community outreach, program development, promotion, and budgeting, and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Bachelors degree in Athletic Training or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience providing athletic training services to student-athletes at the high school, collegiate, or professional level, including experience developing and implementing athletic training programs.
  • Board of Certification (BOC) certification required; must possess or be eligible for licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • Current professional rescuer certifications in CPR, AED, and First Aid required.
  • Ability to contribute to and uphold the standards, expectations, and timelines that support the L&C Athletics team culture.
  • Demonstrated leadership within an athletic environment, with the ability to support student success and contribute to the Colleges broader enrollment and recruitment goals.
Required Skills
  • A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required for success in this role, in addition to normal courtesy and tact with the community in which the AT will be working. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature at times. Work may involve motivating or influencing others in a positive way. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others in an effort to benefit and promote Lewis & Clark Community College.
  • Knowledge of and or targeted understanding of:
    • The sport in which one will be serving as AT.
    • NCAA, NJCAA, and Region 24 rules and policies
    • Learning and motivational methods.
    • Structure and content of the English language including spelling, composition, and grammar. Effective recruiting and scouting prospective student-athletes.
    • Effective promotional practices.
    • Academic requirement in order to properly advise student-athletes.
Physical Demands
  • Physical requirements will vary according to expected duties and responsibilities that flow across the role of the position, including but not limited to the following:
    • Lifting up to 5 lbs. frequently and up to 20 lbs. occasionally
    • Carrying up to 5 lbs. frequently and up to 20 lbs. occasionally
    • Bending, squatting, crawling, and reaching above shoulder level occasionally
    • Keyboarding/routine office work expected daily
    • AT may be around moving machinery; may be exposed to marked changes in temperatures; and will at times may be required to drive automotive equipment.
    • AT may be exposed to dust, fumes, and gases during field and court maintenance.

Additional Requirements

  • In accordance with the Clery Act, this job meets the requirements to be classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). A CSA, under the Clery Act, is an individual or organization designated to report crimes to the institution's Clery Act compliance office or to Campus Safety. CSAs are responsible for reporting crimes they witness or that are reported to them in good faith. Annual training for all CSAs will be provided by the college.

  • Understanding of the importance to maintain adherence to National, and State, and Region Athletic Association standards.

Team Members can expect to be paid a salary between $56,411 to $76,154 alongside an excellent benefits package. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
