The Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture is accepting applications for a part-time Recreation Leader at the Benjamin Gaither Center, a busy recreational facility that serves residents of Gaithersburg and the surrounding area by offering a variety of classes, trips, special events, and activities for those 55 years of age and better.
The successful candidate will plan and lead programs, activities, and trips for Center participants, assist with marketing efforts to increase attendance and awareness of programs to meet the needs of our diverse community, provide support for the daily activities at the Center, and help provide engaging, fun, and well-attended programs, classes, trips, events, and activities that are unique and high-quality.
The ideal candidate will be positive and highly customer focused; an effective communicator; have solid computer skills; be able to take on a variety of responsibilities and juggle multiple tasks; and work effectively independently and as part of the team. The ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish is desirable. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Hours per week will depend on the operational needs of the facility, but will not exceed an average of 27.5 hours per week. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to provide support for programs, activities, trips, or events, and to meet other operational needs. This is an ongoing year-round position.
Starting hourly rate will be within the range and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.
Job Functions
What you will do with us:
- Plan, organize, coordinate, facilitate, and lead programs, trips, and other activities.
- Assist with establishing/maintaining partnerships with various organizations that would facilitate programming that fits with the vision and mission of bringing enrichment opportunities to the Center.
- Assist with developing marketing plans and materials for Center programs, trips, events, and other activities.
- Support other programming initiatives and events at the Center by attending and assisting with programs (including set-up and clean-up) when needed.
- Assist with organizing and implementing program/trip logistics and schedules; maintain registration and attendance records.
- Perform in-office administrative support functions.
- Respond to inquiries and requests for information.
- Provide outstanding service, pursue continuous improvement, and exceed expectations.

Qualifications
What you will need to be considered:
- Be positive and outgoing with strong organizational, customer service, outreach, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills, and enjoy working and interacting with adults aged 55 and better.
- At least one year of relevant experience; previous experience working with older adults a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Solid computer skills (Microsoft Office applications); experience with recreation management or similar software desirable.
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) desirable.
- Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
- Physical ability to occasionally lift/carry materials or objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification (may be obtained through the City upon hire).
- Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties.
