Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Lifeguard (Part-time)

DEPARTMENT: Economic & Business Development

REPORTS TO: Director of the NOWI

LOCATION: New Bedford, MA

POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit professional position without benefits, not to exceed 18.5 hours per week.

SALARY: $20/hr

STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Bristol Community College's National Offshore Wind Institute (NOWI) is a workforce training center that supports the evolving needs of trades-based, maritime, offshore wind, and related industry sectors. The Lifeguard maintains a safe environment and supports the Basic Safety Training (BST) Instructors as they deliver safety trainings in the training tank. An ideal candidate has a valid lifeguard certificate experience lifeguarding, strong communication skills, and demonstrates experience in a professional setting. Successful candidates may be included in several industry-specific Train-the-Trainer programs as the NOWI develops new pool-based courses. Training tank courses are delivered in-person, typically weekday business hours from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM. There may be occasional opportunities for additional hours (including nights and weekends) to serve specific client requests, special events, or participate in training safety drills, when a Lifeguard would be required. With their supervisor, the Lifeguard is expected to provide their availability and monitor the schedule for assignments regularly. Total hours will be determined by courses booked and the amount of availability offered.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains constant surveillance of the pool and the pool areas.

Maintains current knowledge of all emergency procedures within pool and pool area, especially as it relates to the facilities operations.

Responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with policies and procedures; provides timely and accurate reports and follow-ups.

Knows, understands, and consistently applies health and safety rules, policies, guidelines for the pool and pool area.

May assist with pool monitoring, testing, and cleaning, as needed.

Support NOWI Safety Trainers in the practical training area, as needed.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Current certifications in: Lifeguarding (Red Cross or equivalent), CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, and First Aid

Strong observational and decision-making skills.

Ability to remain alert and responsive for extended periods.

Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior lifeguard experience in a public, school, or training facility setting.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification and/or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification

Experience in customer service or working with diverse populations.

High school diploma or equivalent required

At least 1-2 years experience lifeguarding

Professional habits and attitude

Friendly, team player

Interest in safety or technical training environments

Working Conditions:

Must be able to work in a humid indoor aquatic environment or outdoors depending on the facility.

Must be able to sit, stand, and move around pool area for prolonged periods.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical rescues as needed.
