Description

This is a standard position description for use in the Public Educational System of the United States Virgin Islands, which provides vocational or technical education instructional activities, and supervision of students. This is a ten-month position. Teaching professionals are represented by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Specialized training and Certification in a vocational subject area or instructional level is required. A teacher works, under the general supervision of a Principal, Assistant Principal, or other administrators. Work is reviewed through observations, evaluations, and informal and formal conferences. Guidelines of the position include Governmental and Departmental regulations, directives, initiatives, legislative acts and bills, Contractual Agreements, Virgin Islands Code, Board of Education policies, Personnel and Budgetary manuals. Duties and responsibilities are general and technical, and require independent judgment. The purpose of this position is to support and carry out the goals and objectives of the school district's programs and the Department's mandates to provide educational services to children. Contacts are primarily with Principals, Coordinators, other administrators, coworkers, students, parents, and the community at large. The primary purpose of the contacts is to provide information, assistance and support, gather information, teach and evaluate instructional outcomes, and make recommendations for improving the system.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts instruction in vocational and technical education subject area(s) for assigned students;
  • Specifies or selects teaching procedures for vocational and technical education lessons;
  • Provides assistance to students to facilitate their learning of instructional objectives/goals;
  • Utilizes a repertoire of teaching and vocational and technical education methods;
  • Participates in staff development training workshops, seminars/meetings, as appropriate;
  • Keeps abreast of vocational and technical education instructional innovations, curriculum trends, research information, etc. and selects materials for lessons;
  • Participates as a team member with professional colleagues for school based enhancement of vocational instructional initiatives;
  • Assesses learner progress on specific vocational and technical education objectives;
  • Reinforces and encourages learner involvement in instruction;
  • Organizes instruction, taking into account individual differences among learners as the differences relate to such elements as capabilities, styles of learning, and rates of learning;
  • Uses evaluation materials or procedures to obtain information about the needs and progress of individual learners, and revises instruction as needed;
  • Refers learners with special problems to specialists;
  • Work is performed in a vocational and technical education laboratory school setting, which is drug free, violence free and smoke free;
  • Field trips to vocational and technical educational related settings may be required;
  • Teachers are expected to accept a share of the responsibility for the smooth functioning of the school and share in the enforcement of the rules and regulations of the school and the policies of the Department of Education;
  • Each teacher is responsible for the discipline within their classroom and should be in complete control at all times;
  • Each teacher is expected to abide by a professional code of ethics which requires professional conduct at all times;
  • Each teacher owes professional loyalty to his fellow teachers, the administration of his school, and the Department of Education;

Minimum Qualifications

  • Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Certification, Water Safety Certificate, American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, Water Rescue, First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), .
  • Experience as a certified swimming instructor, youth sports instructor/coach, camp counselor, and/or childcare provider required. Two or more years as a swimming instructor required.

Position Factors

  • Knowledge of the education laws, policies, rules and regulations of the United States Virgin Islands, as well as within respective schools;
  • Knowledge of the safety laws, policies, rules and regulations of the USVI and Federal Guidelines as they refer to their specific Vocational or Technical education field;
  • Knowledge of the student learning process;
  • Knowledge of the principles of teaching and classroom control;
  • Ability to plan lessons, coordinate resources, and manage time on task;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, administrators, parents and others;
  • Work requires tolerance, patience, walking, standing, sitting, bending, use of voice;
  • Knowledge of Virgin Islands history and culture, and the ability to integrate and customize where appropriate, folklore themes, historical elements, and geographical factors which influence the lives of students.
