SPORTS CAMP COUNSELOR WESTWOOD PARK
YMCA of Greater Nashua / Full-Time Seasonal Position
Camp Dates: June 22 August 21
SCHEDULE: This is a Full-Time Seasonal Summer Position .
Camp programming hours are MondayFriday between 9:00 am4:00 pm.
Staff will also support rotating pre-camp (7:009:00 am) and post-camp (4:006:00 pm) coverage schedules.
Because of the short seasonal nature of camp programming and the importance of consistency for campers and families, time-off requests during the camp season may be limited.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the association sports director, the sports camp counselor helps create a fun, safe, and welcoming environment where campers can grow in confidence, build friendships, and develop a sense of belonging through sports and recreation.
Counselors lead small and large group activities for children ages 615 and are responsible for the daily supervision, engagement, and safety of up to 15 campers. Staff are expected to model the ymcas core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility while helping campers experience teamwork, sportsmanship, personal growth, and joy throughout the summer. The ideal candidate is energetic, dependable, positive, and passionate about working with youth. They should enjoy being active, building relationships, encouraging others, and creating an inclusive environment where every camper feels welcomed, supported, and valued.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 17 years old
Experience working with children in camp, recreation, sports, youth development, or childcare settings preferred
Ability to lead and teach sports activities while promoting teamwork, inclusion, and fair play
Commitment to creating a positive and supportive experience for youth
Strong communication and relationship-building skills with children, families, and staff
Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a physically active environment
Reliable transportation required
Ability to lift up to 60 pounds
Ability to move quickly and respond appropriately to maintain camper safety
Current cpr/aed and first aid certification preferred (or ability to obtain before camp begins)
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Attend all required pre-season trainings and staff meetings
Lead and participate in daily camp activities, games, and sports programming
Supervise and actively engage campers throughout the day
Help create an environment where campers feel safe, included, encouraged, and connected
Support positive behavior management using consistent expectations and relationship-building approaches
Communicate concerns, incidents, and camper needs promptly with the association sports director
Maintain strong, professional relationships with campers, families, and fellow staff
Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating ymca values and sportsmanship
Assist with maintaining equipment, supplies, and camp spaces
Be prepared with alternative activities for weather changes or schedule adjustments
Respond appropriately to routine health and safety situations including minor injuries, hydration needs, and emergency procedures
Ensure all required incident reports and documentation are completed accurately and promptly
Submit a current physical examination form dated within two years prior to the first day of camp employment
