ABOUT THE POSITION : Under the direction of supervision, plans, organizes and implements recreation activities at neighborhood playgrounds or facilities; instructs children, youth and senior citizens in games and sports. May be required to work nights, weekends, and during city-wide special events throughout the year.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES : Essential duties include, but are not limited to: Plans, organizes and delivers a variety of parks and community center programs, services and special events as directed; assists in providing on-site supervision to program participants; responds to inquiries related to facility usage, programs, activities and community events; registers participants for participants for sports, activities and programs; collects fees; coaches sports and officiates at games; supervises activities on the playground and facility; observes participants ensuring park and facility rules and regulations are followed and a safe environment exists; observes the condition of park and community center facilities and reports incidents of vandalism, graffiti and suspicious activity to supervisors or law enforcement agencies; administers first aid for minor injuries; completes forms, inspection sheets, attendance reports, weekly activity schedules; performs periodic equipment inventory; checks and accounts for playground and fitness room equipment; set up, prepare and clean designated areas for activities and events; performs a variety of routine office work including assisting at the front counter and answering phones; explains park, community center, and City policies and procedures to the participants; and performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS : Any combination of work experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: possession of a high school diploma / GED and six (6) months experience working with children, youth or senior citizens. Maintain a certificate in CPR/First Aid. Desired qualifications include some college coursework in sports, recreation or related field, creativity, good decision making and leadership skills.

Knowledge of : Principles and practices of personal computers and related software; principles and practices of City Administration and department functions; general public assessment of the City roles, responsibilities and commitment to its citizens; activities, games and sports for children, youth and senior citizens; safety rules and regulations.

Ability to : Exercise appropriate judgement; maintain and establish effective and cooperative working relationships; communicate effectively in writing and orally, and reason logically and creatively; identify vandalism and suspicious activity; identify and act to resolve unsafe conditions; problem solve conflicts and disputes; explain safety and activity rules to attendees; understand park, community center, fitness room operations and issues; teach recreation and sports activities for children, youth, and adults; and instruct and enforce safety rules. On a frequent basis sit at desk; use of hands and fingers; speak and hear; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; walk and stand to perform office activities and site inspections; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; occasionally bend, squat, stoop, kneel, push, pull, and lift 25 pounds; subject to frequent interruptions, public contact and moderate noise level in the work environment.
