GENERAL PURPOSE

The Summer Camp Director is responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, and managing the City of Texarkana, Texas Parks & Recreation Summer Camp Program at the Southwest Center. The Director will oversee daily camp operations, supervise staff and participants, maintain a safe and positive environment, and engaging recreational and educational programming for elementary-age participants.

Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator.

None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists and oversees Summer Camp operations from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. for approximately 6 weeks.

Develop weekly camp curriculum and activity schedules.

Coordinate recreational, educational, and enrichment activities.

Utilize previous years camp materials and community partnerships to build programming.

Organize supply needs and prepare activity materials.

Assist with staff orientation and training/follow up on volunteer inquiries.

Coordinate with Parks & Recreation administration regarding camp logistics and policies.

Flexible pre-camp planning hours will be scheduled according to program needs and the Directors availability.

Supervise weekly camp curriculum and activity schedules.

Ensure all Parks & Recreation camp rules, safety standards, and disciplinary procedures.

Supervise camp volunteers and other parks and rec staff assisting.

Maintain attendance records and participant information.

Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding camp activities and participant behavior.

Coordinate field trips, guest speakers, and community partnerships.

Maintain organized records and reports.

Monitor camp supplies and equipment.

Assist with participant check-in/check-out procedures.

Ensure compliance with City policies and camp procedures.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Performs other job functions as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(a)High school diploma or GED equivalent.

(b)Some experience in dealing with the public.

(c)Background in education preferred, with elementary education experience strongly preferred

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

(a)Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operation, and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program.

(b)CPR/First aid certification preferred (or ability to obtain)

(c)Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, peers, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively orally.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Various recreational equipment, copier, and phone. Computer operation skills, Microsoft Word and Excel.
