POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Camp Counselor is responsible for leading and supervising daily camp activities for children ages 612 in a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. Counselors work directly with groups of up to 15 campers and play an important role in helping every child feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged throughout their camp experience.
The ideal candidate is energetic, dependable, creative, and passionate about working with youth. Counselors should be able to build positive relationships with campers, families, and fellow staff while modeling YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
This role supports the YMCAs mission of strengthening spirit, mind, and body for all by helping campers achieve goals, build healthy relationships, and experience belonging.
Seasonal Schedule
- Summer seasonal position
- Typical hours: 8:30 AM 4:30 PM
- Counselors may occasionally be scheduled for:
- Pre-Camp Hours: 7:00 AM 9:00 AM
- Post-Camp Hours: 4:00 PM 6:00 PM
- Consistent attendance is essential throughout the summer camp season
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Camper Experience & Engagement
Lead and participate in daily camp activities including games, arts and crafts, sports, nature activities, team-building activities, and group experiences
Foster a fun, welcoming, and inclusive environment where all campers feel safe, valued, and supported
Encourage camper participation, creativity, friendship-building, and positive behavior
Help campers build confidence, independence, and social-emotional skills
Safety & Supervision
Maintain active supervision of campers at all times
Follow YMCA safety procedures and risk management guidelines
Respond appropriately to incidents, injuries, or behavioral concerns
Serve as the immediate responder for routine camper health needs such as minor scrapes, dehydration, sun protection, or tick checks
Utilize appropriate preventative health and sanitation practices, including gloves or barriers when needed
Communication & Teamwork
Maintain positive communication with campers, parents/guardians, and fellow staff
Keep the Camp Director informed of camper concerns, behavioral issues, schedule adjustments, and program needs
Participate in all required staff meetings and trainings
Collaborate with staff to create a positive and supportive camp culture
YMCA Leadership & Stewardship

Represent the YMCA professionally and positively at all times
Care for camp equipment, supplies, and facilities
Support an environment where every child can achieve, relate, and belong
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Previous experience working with children in camp, recreation, education, childcare, or youth development settings preferred
- Ability to lead and engage children in group activities
- Strong communication, teamwork, and relationship-building skills
- Ability to remain positive, patient, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
- Reliable transportation required
- Ability to lift up to 60 pounds
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain if required)
